Celebrating 90 years w/ Jaques Pépin

In the world of culinary arts, few names shine as brightly as Jacques Pépin’s. As this legendary chef approaches his 90th birthday on December 18, (born in Bourg-en-Bresse, France in 1935), Pépin is being feted nationwide in 2025 in celebration.

If you are involved in any way with the foodservice industry, you know what an immense impact he has had on the culinary world and of his ongoing commitment to nurturing future generations of chefs.

He began his life in the kitchen at an early age in his family’s restaurant. He eventually moved to Paris, ultimately serving as personal chef to three French heads of state, including Charles de Gaulle. After moving to the United States in 1959, Pépin was hired by Pierre Franey at Le Pavillon, an historic French restaurant in New York City. Then, from 1960 to 1970, he was director of research and new development for Howard Johnson's, developing recipes for the chain. Among his iconic creations were Chicken Pot Pie, Fried Clams, Clam Chowder, and The Curly Dog.

Pépin was also a notable TV chef, hosting Jacques Pépin: Fast Food My Way" based on a 2004 cookbook. Later he co-starred with his best friend Julia Child for the Emmy winning PBS series Julia and Jacques Cooking at Home.

The 90/90 Dinner Series

At the heart of this celebration is the Nationwide 90/90 Dinner Series campaign. This innovative initiative brings together top chefs and restaurants across the country to honor Pépin's legacy while supporting a cause close to his heart.

One standout event in this series of 90 dinners will take place November 1, 2025, at The French Laundry, in Yountville, CA. This a once-in-a-lifetime celebration hosted by Chef Thomas Keller. At this one, Pépin will be in attendance sharing the stories and secrets behind the menu.

This, as are all the other events, is a testament to Pépin's influence and the respect he commands within the culinary community. The chefs involved are undoubtedly pulling out all the stops to create dishes that pay homage to Pépin's culinary philosophy and techniques.

Supporting the Next Generation

What makes this celebration truly special is its focus on the future. The proceeds from All of these dinners go to the support of the Jacques Pépin Foundation. This foundation plays a crucial role in supporting and nurturing the next generation of chefs, ensuring that Pépin's legacy continues to shape the culinary world for years to come. By attending these events, food enthusiasts not only get to experience exceptional cuisine but also contribute to the development of future culinary talents.

While this is partly a celebration of the chef’s remarkable career, it is also looking ahead to the future of culinary arts, inspired by his passion, skill, and dedication to nurturing talent. The 90/90 Dinner Series is more than a birthday celebration—it's a testament to the enduring impact of a true culinary legend, and we at Galley congratulate him and salute his talent and vision.
